TREFFRIDOWE, Thomas, of Treffridowe, Cornw.

Thomas, a lawyer by profession, was associated with Robert and John Treffridowe (probably his father and elder brother), as a co-defendant in several suits brought at the assizes at Launceston and in the King’s bench between 1407 and 1417.KB27/595 rot. 21d, 605 rot. attorneys, 621 rot. attorneys; JUST 1/1519 mm. 89d, 121, 1529 m. 12, 1531 m. 29. It was by himself, however, that during the same period he filed a suit in the court of common pleas against John Sampson, a Plymouth merchant, for a debt of ten marks. His most important contacts were with members of the gentry of Devon: in December 1417 he stood surety in Chancery for Edward Pomeroy, supporting him in his quarrel with Sir Thomas Pomeroy over the family estates; and it was as a member of the retinue of the leading Devonshire magnate of the time, Hugh Courtenay, earl of Devon, that in June 1420 he took out royal letters of protection prior to service abroad.CPR, 1422-9, p. 368; CCR, 1413-19, p. 451; DKR, xliv. 619.
