Although Stampe witnessed several conveyances in Bridport, he is not known to have ever held property there. Yet he did own lands at Netherbury, which is only some three miles away.C146/58, 88, 3599; Dorset RO, B3/D2, f. 120; Dorset Feet of Fines, 231. A lawyer, from 1397 he made regular appearances at the Dorchester assizes, serving as attorney in pleas of novel disseisin on behalf of members of the local gentry such as John Chideok, and also for the abbot of Sherborne.JUST 1/1502, m. 218, 1512 m. 59, 1519 mm. 113, 116, 119d. On 1 Dec. 1399 he was granted at the Exchequer a lease of lands at Okeford in Marshwood Vale, Dorset, which, backdated to the first day of Henry IV’s reign, was to last for as long as the premises were in possession of the Crown. He attended the shire elections at Dorchester for the Parliaments of 1407, 1420 and 1421, in March 1421 standing surety for the knights of the shire, Sir Humphrey Stafford II and Robert Lovell, and he was one of four Bridport delegates reporting to the shire court the outcome of the borough elections to the assemblies of 1413 (May) and 1419.CFR, xii. 29; C219/10/4, 11/2, 12/3-6.
