SPEED, William, of Hereford.

Speed regularly witnessed conveyances in Hereford from 1368 onwards, and, in February 1373, was described as a resident of the city when he obtained a royal pardon of his outlawry in Shropshire for failing to appear in the court of King’s bench to answer charges of debts amounting to £7 6s.8d.Cal. Hereford Cathedral Muns. (NLW 1955), nos. 80, 179, 401, 2782; CPR, 1370-4, p. 246. In September 1388 he was party to a conveyance of property outside the Widemarsh Gate, and in the following year he figured among the leading citizens most directly involved in the dispute with the dean and chapter, being among the nine men who, entering into a bond for £200, then covenanted to abide by the award of Bishop Trefnant and Sir John Clanvowe.
