MACOP (MAKOC), John, of Rye, Suss.

Macop witnessed deeds at Rye between 1386 and 1407, and during his mayoral year he paid a maltolt of 2s.4d. there.Ibid. 122/3, 136/133; Rye Corporation ms 60/1. He and his wife acquired property locally in 1391, and in 1399 he shared in a lease of land belonging to the parish church of St. Mary. He expanded his holdings by purchasing, from John Salerne I, land outside the north gate adjacent to his own, while further away he possessed land in Telham, Knelle, Wivelridge and Hope, on which as a Portsman he claimed exemption from taxation under Henry IV. In November 1405 he was suing John Baker of Playden, near Rye, for debt. He acted as a churchwarden of St. Mary’s in 1410, but is not recorded after that year.Cat.
