ROBINSON, Nicholas (d.1753), of Thicket, Yorks.

Nicholas Robinson was descended from a merchant and alderman of London, whose son settled at Thicket about the beginning of the seventeenth century.Fam. Min. Gent. (Harl. Soc. xxxix), 990; Genealogist, n. s. xxvi. 226-8. Returned as a Whig for Wootton Bassett in 1734, he voted for the Spanish convention in 1739, and was absent from the division on the place bill in 1740. Defeated in 1741, he did not stand again. While in Parliament he was captain of a sloop to prevent smuggling, at £500 p.a.Gent. Mag. 1739, p. 307. On 16 June 1743 he was court martialled at Sheerness and fined 12 months’ pay for defrauding the Government of £138. 18s. by false accounts.Charnock, Biog. Navalis, iv. 302-3. He died 1 Feb. 1753.
