SANDFORD, Sir Richard (1675-1723), of Howgill Castle, Westmld.

Sandford came of one of the most ancient families of Westmorland, which his ancestors had frequently represented. Returned as a Whig for the county before coming of age, he sat from 1713 for Appleby, where he owned 13 burgages.B. Bonsall, Sir Jas. Lowther and Cumb. and Westmld. Elections, 20. At George I’s accession he obtained a place, which he lost in 1717 for voting against the Government in the division on Lord Cadogan, thenceforth voting against them in all recorded divisions. On his death, 2 Apr. 1723, his estates passed to his sister, the wife of Robert Honywood.
