James Scott, related to James Scott of Logie and Robert Scott of Dunninald, was descended, as were all the Scotts in Angus, from the family of Balwearie, Fife. A professional soldier, he had the remarkable distinction of serving for 51 years in the same regiment, including nearly 20 years in command. Returned four times for his county, he voted with the Administration in all recorded divisions. The secret committee of inquiry into the South Sea bubble disclosed in 1721 that he had accepted £1,000 stock from the Company without paying for it.
