The representative of a senior branch of the Buccleuch family, Scott was returned for his county in 1747 with the backing of the Marquess of Lothian, who supported the Government;Lothian to Newcastle, 27 Aug. 1747, Add. 32712, f. 438. but in a list prepared by Pelham for the next general election in Scotland he is shown as ‘opposing’.Newcastle (Clumber) mss. He died 25 Jan. 1793.
