Returned for Eye as a Whig in 1715 on the Cornwallis interest, Smith voted against the septennial bill and the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts but for the peerage bill. He did not stand in 1722 but was brought in for Tregony on the Treasury interest there at George II’s accession, when he obtained a court office. He died 3 Aug. 1728.
