Charles Stanhope, although the youngest son, inherited under the will of his grandfather, the 2nd Lord Chesterfield, a large estate entailed after him upon his other brothers.PCC 5 Fagg. In 1730 he was returned unopposed for Derby by his brother, Philip Dormer, Lord Chesterfield, whom he followed into opposition in 1733, voting against the Government on the excise bill and on the repeal of the Septennial Act in 1734. Re-elected after a contest, he died 20 Feb. 1736.
