TUCKFIELD, Roger (?1685-1739), of Raddon Court, Devon.

The Tuckfields, originally wealthy clothiers, had been seated at Raddon since the sixteenth century. In 1702 they purchased a moiety of the manor of Ashburton,Lysons, Devonshire, i. clviii; ii. 13; Trans. Dev. Assoc. xiv. 448; Magna Britannia (1715), i. 524; G. D. Stawell, Quantock Fam. 170-5, app. xvi n. 10. obtaining control of the borough, for which Roger Tuckfield sat, with one short interruption, from the first by-election following his coming of age till his death. Classed as a Whig in 1715, he was absent from the division on the septennial bill but supported the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts in 1719. He was classed as ‘doubtful’ by Sunderland on the peerage bill, ‘to be spoken to’ by Carteret, but he was absent from the division on the bill. No further vote of his is recorded during the remaining 20 years of his parliamentary career. He died 26 Mar. 1739, leaving Ashburton to his sister, the wife of John Harris, on whose death in 1754 it was inherited by her daughter, the wife of the and Earl of Orford, while Raddon went to his cousin John Tuckfield.Lady Orford to Jas.
