The nephew of Sir Patience Ward, lord mayor of London 1681-2, Ward was returned for the city on the government list, voting for the septennial bill in 1716. During the split in the Whig party from 1717 to 1720 he voted with the Opposition. On 3 Aug. 1721 he presented a petition on behalf of the proprietors of the redeemable funds, and in December of that year he supported the Quaker affirmation bill.
