Returned for Canterbury on the ‘country interest’ as an opposition Whig, Watson voted consistently against the Administration. Despite his politics he was appointed lord lieutenant of the county on succeeding to the peerage, but he enjoyed his honours for little over two months, dying 26 Feb. 1746. He left his estates to his cousin, Lewis Monson, who subsequently assumed the name of Watson.
