GREY, Sir Henry, 2nd Bt. (1722-1808), of Howick, Northumb.

Grey, ‘a young man of great family and fortune’,Northumberland to Newcastle, 30 June 1753, Add. 32732, ff. 129-30. was returned unopposed in 1754 with the support of Lord Northumberland and the Pelhams; and again in 1761. In Dupplin’s list of 1754 he was classed as a Government Whig. Under George III he adhered to Bute,John Craufurd to C. Jenkinson, 3 Apr. 1763, Bute mss. and presumably to Grenville; while Rockingham in July 1765 classed him as ‘pro’. But no vote by him is recorded during this period. Edward Blackett wrote to Captain Henry Tulip, 27 Mar. 1767:Blackett mss at Matfen.

I was told that the doorkeeper of the House of Commons refused Sir H. Grey admittance t’other day, taking him for a stranger; and that some Members of his acquaintance were forced to be called out of the House to vouch for him that he was a Member. A long absence had made him be forgot, even by the doorkeeper.

In Townshend’s list of January 1767 and Newcastle’s of March he is classed as absent. He did not stand in 1768.

Grey died 3 Apr. 1808.
