HANMER, Walden (1717-83), of Simpson, Bucks.

In 1761 Hanmer, with the support of part of the corporation, stood at Bedford in opposition to Francis Herne, but declined after the first day’s poll. In 1766 he unsuccessfully applied to George Grenville for a Welsh judgeship.Grenville to Hanmer, 19 Jan. 1766, Grenville letter bk. He considered standing for Bedford again in 1768, and seems to have been well received by the Duke of Bedford,Same to same, 27 Sept. 1767, ibid. but eventually stood for Sudbury and was returned after a contest. In Parliament he regularly voted with the Administration. In 1774 he again contested Sudbury, and, defeated at the poll, was seated on petition. He again supported Administration, but towards the end of the Parliament seems to have attended infrequently. There is no record of his having spoken in the House. He did not stand again in 1780, and died 20 Oct. 1783.
