HILDYARD, Sir Robert, 3rd Bt. (1716-81), of Winstead, Yorks.

Hildyard was mentioned in November 1753 as a possible candidate for York at the forthcoming general election,W. Murray to Rockingham, 27 Nov. 1753, Rockingham mss. but nothing came of it. He was returned for Great Bedwyn as the joint candidate of Lords Bruce and Verney, and paid £2,000 for his seat. He was classed in Dupplin’s list as Whig country gentleman. His only recorded vote was against Newcastle and Fox on the Minorca inquiry, 3 May 1757.West to Newcastle, 3 May 1757, Add. 32871, f. 13.

He is not known to have stood again for Parliament. He firmly opposed the American war, and was one of the original members of the committee of the Yorkshire Association. He died 1 Feb. 1781.
