At the general election of 1761 Lord Brudenell was returned unopposed for Marlborough, the pocket borough of his uncle, Lord Bruce. His peerage may have been obtained with a view to forestalling Lady Cardigan’s elder sister, the dowager Duchess of Manchester, who desired to secure the title of Montagu of Boughton for her second husband Sir Edward Hussey Montagu.

He died v.p. 11 Apr. 1770.
