MORGAN, Charles Morgan Robinson (1792-1875), of Ruperra, Glam. and Tredegar, Mon.

Morgan was returned by his father for the family borough of Brecon before he came of age; at the same time his father indicated that he was aiming at the county seat for his heir at the next election. This involved him in a contest with Thomas Wood the sitting Member which, despite a canvass lasting three years, and great expense, he lost in 1818.R. D. Rees, ‘Parl. Rep. S. It was rumoured that he would come in for Monmouth soon afterwards,NLW, Mayberry mss 6899. but he remained out of Parliament until 1830, his younger brother having been awarded the seat for Brecon in the interval. He followed his father’s line in politics, supporting Lord Liverpool’s administration, except on the renewal of the property tax, 18 Mar. 1816. Like his father, he voted against Catholic relief, 24 May 1813, 9 May 1817, and for the suspension of habeas corpus, 23 June 1817. He did not figure in debate and his opponent in 1818 hinted that Morgan had attended the previous year only when on his way to Northamptonshire for hunting.Ibid. 6509, 6510. His politics remained conservative and he ultimately achieved his father’s and grandfather’s ambition of a peerage to embellish the family’s territorial, industrial and electoral empire. He died 16 Apr. 1875.
