A little more may be added to the earlier biography.
In May 1420 Welles served as a juror at Southwark at an inquisition post mortem into the lands of Hugh Holt, along with Peter Saverey* and William Moyle I*. It is possible that it was this man who, with his wife Alice, received a papal indult for a portable altar in October 1425.[ii] In 1436, Welles’s Surrey holdings were said to be worth some £5 p.a., probably an underestimate.[iii]
