WARFIELD, John

Little needs to be added to the earlier biography to further emphasize Warfield’s very close connexion with the influential Thomas Chaucer*, although it should be pointed out that his previously unknown role as bailiff of the honour of Wallingford provides more evidence of his official ties to Chaucer, who was steward of the honour and constable of Wallingford castle. The Commons 1386-1421, iv. 772-3. J.H. Baker, in Men of Ct. (Selden Soc. supp. ser. xviii), ii. 1626, erroneously calls him William Warfield. Warfield served as a juror in Berkshire at the inquisition post mortem on Chaucer’s widow Maud in May 1437. CIPM, xxiv. 686.
