Described as ‘junior’ in the election indenture of 1423, it is difficult satisfactorily to disentangle this MP’s career from that of his father. C219/13/2. No doubt it was the father who served as bailiff in 1405-6 and the son who held the office 21 years later. Northampton Recs. ed. Markham and Cox, ii. 557; C219/13/4. The former appears to have been the more prominent man and may have had a legal training: described as ‘herebailly’, he made several personal appearances as a litigant in the central courts and acted as executor of Ankaret, the widow of Sir Thomas Drakelowe of Wilby, Northamptonshire. CP40/644, rot. 360; 648, rot. 131; KB27/636, rot. 49; 634, rot. 6. By contrast the MP was an ironmonger, for he is so described in an action of trespass sued against him and his father by a local esquire in 1418. KB27/629, rot. 76d. Nothing else is known of him and it may be that he died relatively young. The Northampton Tirynghams are to be distinguished from their gentry namesakes of Tyringham, Bucks., who, at least by the 1480s, also had property in Northampton: PCC 10 Logge (PROB11/7, f. 74). The two John Tirynghams, who attested three Northants. elections between 1442 and 1472, were of the latter: C219/15/2, 6; 17/2; VCH Bucks. iv. 483.
