SOLAS, James

Solas, a fishmonger, lived in the High Street aldermanry in Winchester, and contributed to the parliamentary subsidies collected there in 1430, 1435 and 1436. D.J. Keene, Surv. Winchester (Winchester Studies, 2), ii. 1351. He also held a garden in Gar Street from 1429 onwards. Ibid. ii. no. 678. As bailiff of the 24, and together with his counterpart from the commons, John Parker IV*, he responded to the sheriff’s precept to hold a parliamentary election in Winchester in March 1432; and at the next election, in June 1433, he stood surety for the attendance in the Commons of the lawyer Robert Colpays*. When he himself was returned in 1435, John Dutton*, a saddler, appeared as a mainpernor on his behalf. C219/14/3-5.
