In April 1409, before his first Parliament, Shelley had served as a juror at Dover providing information about the Portsmen from Sussex who claimed exemption from taxation on their chattels outside the liberties of the Cinque Ports. It seems likely that he was the man of this name retained early in 1424 for service in the army of the warden of the Ports, Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, for the campaign to recapture Le Crotoy. If so, his role was probably focused on the naval assault. E403/664, m. 17.
