Before entering Parliament, Sampson quarrelled violently with a fellow burgess, Roger Bawde*. In 1416 a borough court found that he had attacked Bawde, from whom he drawn blood with a broken bolt (petulione), and that Bawde had assaulted him with a knife. It appears that the court held Sampson mainly to blame for the fracas, since it amerced him 12d. and Bawde only 3d.
