John George Philipps succeeded to his father’s influence in Carmarthen. In Parliament he was a follower of Fox. No speeches by him are recorded 1784-90

On 28 Mar. 1787, in response to requests from the mayor, sheriffs, and the dissenting minister of Carmarthen, he voted for the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts.Trans. Carm. Antiq. Soc. xxvi. 26-27. In consequence the bishop of St. David’s called on the Anglican clergy in the town to oppose Philipps at the next general election:Oldfield, Boroughs (1792), iii. 15-16. but Philipps retained his hold on the borough.

He died in June 1816.
