Smith, a country gentleman with a seat three miles from Bath, was in 1766 returned by a majority of one vote over his opponent Walter Long. Rockingham, in November 1766, and Newcastle on 2 Mar. 1767 classed him as ‘doubtful’, and his only recorded vote during this Parliament was with Opposition on the land tax, 27 Feb. 1767. In 1768 he was returned unopposed; voted consistently with Opposition; was returned at the head of the poll in 1774; and continued to oppose Administration till his death on 12 Nov. 1775.
