Burton, a veteran Irish county Member connected with the Ponsonbys, acted with opposition in the years preceding the Union. He voted against the Union, but sold one of his two borough seats (for Carlow) to a supporter of the bill, Lord Charleville. He had not turned up at Westminster by 25 Mar. 1801 and made no mark there. In 1802 he was defeated. He died 7 Jan. 1818.
