By 1544 Hobson was able to give £6 13s. to a benevolence, the highest contribution from the town. No information about his calling has been found, and no records survive about any parliamentary activity. He or his father speculated in chantry lands in Sussex, mainly in the Hastings and Shepley districts, and Hobson had also property at Westfield and Icklesham. Hobson made his will in December 1581, proved in October 1583. He left bequests to his two surviving sons, John and James, and to a grandson, also James. The two unmarried daughters received £50 each.
