Described as of London in 1556, by 1559 Hawtrey was living at West Turville, afterwards acquiring a 21-year lease of the rectory and advowson of Wendover, where he was living when he made his will in July 1582. The will, proved 3 Apr. 1587, mentions neither wife nor son. He asked to be buried at Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire, and left all his goods to his brother William, who was co-executor with another brother, Thomas. Hawtrey may have owed his return for Bedford to the 2nd Earl of Bedford, who mentions him in his will.
