GOURNEY, Thomas (by 1529-74), of Townstall, Dartmouth, Devon.

When Gourney was mayor it fell to his lot to interrogate a Spaniard arrested at Dartmouth by one Reynolds, a servant of the vice-admiral of Devon. Following a dispute between Gourney and Reynolds, the latter was put in irons in the town gaol. Depositions were taken by the 2nd Earl of Bedford and the matter was settled only in 1562. Gourney died in 1574, administration of his goods being granted to his wife. Nothing has been ascertained about any activities by Gourney in any of his Parliaments.Vivian, Vis.
