BACON, Edward (?1712-86), of Earlham, nr. Norwich.

In 1739 Edward Bacon was invited to stand with Tory support against the sitting Whig Members for Norwich, which his father had long represented.J. Fowle to ’old’ Horace Walpole, 4 Nov. 1739, Walpole (Wolterton) mss. In response to local representations he agreed to defer a decision till he had consulted ‘old’ Horace Walpole, the senior sitting Member, who arranged for him to be brought in for King’s Lynn on the Walpole interest in 1742. He voted regularly with the Government and in 1748 was returned on the Walpole interest for Callington as a government supporter. He was again invited to stand for Norwich in 1754 but declined in order to oblige Pelham, who provided him with another seat.Add. 32995, f. 128. Returned at last for Norwich in 1756, he continued to represent the city till shortly before his death, 12 Mar. 1786.
