BAMPFYLDE, John (1691-1750), of Poltimore, nr. Exeter, Devon.

Returned as a Tory for Exeter on the family interest, Bampfylde was absent for the divisions on the septennial and peerage bills but voted against the Government on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts. Like his brother, he accepted £1,000 South Sea stock at 275 on 22 Mar. 1720 without paying for it.CJ, xix. 570. He was included in the list of probable supporters sent to the Pretender in 1721.Stuart mss 65/16. He was out of Parliament from 1722 to 1736, when he was returned unopposed for the county, voting against the Spanish convention in 1739 but absent from the division on the place bill in 1740; did not stand again; and died 17 Sept. 1750.
