Jacob Banks’s father, who died in December 1724, was a naval officer of Swedish birth and Tory M.P. for Minehead under Queen Anne. Inheriting the manor of Christchurch from his brother,VCH Hants, v. 94-95. he was returned there at a by-election in 1726, presumably as a Tory, but lost his seat at the general election of 1727, his repeated petitions making no progress. In 1734 ‘he suffered himself to be courted and chosen by a mercenary and ungrateful borough’,London Mag. 1738, p. 219. Shaftesbury, which he represented till his death on 18 Feb. 1738. No vote of his has been recorded.
