BARKER, Sir William, 5th Bt. (?1685-1731), of Grimston Hall, Suff.

At the end of the sixteenth century the Barkers, an Ipswich family, acquired Grimston Hall, eight miles from Ipswich, which they frequently represented. A Tory and a member of the October Club, Barker, after sitting for Ipswich and Thetford under Anne, was returned unopposed at a by-election for the county in 1722, speaking against the Government on the army estimates, 23 Nov. 1724, and the vote of credit on 12 Apr. 1727. Re-elected in 1727 after a contest, he spoke against the Government on a vote of credit, 7 May 1728, and on the civil list arrears, 23 and 24 Apr. 1729.Knatchbull Diary, App. C. 127-8, and App. D. 132, 140-1.
