BARNE, Miles (1718-80), of Sotterley Hall, nr. Beccles, Suff.

Barne came of a family of London merchants, descended from Sir George Barne, lord mayor of London 1552. Having purchased an estate in Suffolk in 1744, he was invited by ‘a respectable number of the freemen of Dunwich’, who had been offended by the neglect shown to them by Sir George Downing, the proprietor of the borough, to stand at the next election. Downing was obliged to give way, and Barne was returned with him, classed as a government supporter.Memo respecting the borough of Dunwich (1813), Barne fam. pprs., Ipswich and E. Suff. RO. He did not stand in 1754, when he told the freemen that if he outlived Downing’s heir, Sir Jacob Downing, he would then propose himself again, which he did.

He died 27 Dec. 1780.
