CALTHORPE, Reynolds (1655-1720), of Elvetham, Hants.

Reynolds Calthorpe’s father, who was knighted by Cromwell, came from the ancient family of Calthorpe of Cockthorpe, Norfolk. His brother-in-law, Sir Robert Reynolds, M.P. Hindon in the Long Parliament, bought the Elvetham estate which, on his death in 1678, passed to his daughter Priscilla, afterwards Reynolds Calthorpe’s 1st wife.VCH Hants, iv. 75. By leasing the manor of Hindon from the bishop of Winchester the Calthorpes acquired an interest in the borough, which Reynolds Calthorpe represented as a Whig in several Parliaments under William III and Anne. His elder son also held one of the Hindon seats from 1713 till his death v.p. on 10 Apr. 1714. Returned as a Whig for Hindon in 1715, Calthorpe voted against the Government in all recorded divisions except on Lord Cadogan (see Cadogan, William). In ill-health during 1719, when he was treated by Sir Hans Sloane,Sloane 4034, f. 289. he died 12 Apr. 1720.
