James Carmichael was returned unopposed on his family’s interest for Linlithgow Burghs in 1734, voting with the Administration in all recorded divisions. At the 1741 election he was involved in a double return with James Mackye, an opposition candidate, on which he withdrew his petition in January 1742. Defeated in 1747 by Lawrence Dundas, a wealthy contractor, his petition was this time successful. Up to the date of his death, about April 1754, he was drawing a secret service pension of £400.Add. 33038, ff. 353, 415.
