Early in the reign of Elizabeth the Champernownes had acquired Dartington near Totnes, which they had since occasionally represented. Returned unopposed for Totnes, classed as a Whig who would often vote with the Tories, Champernowne voted against the septennial bill in 1716 and died 27 Apr. 1717. His son three times contested Totnes unsuccessfully.
