Cleiveland’s father left Leicestershire to become the adopted son of his uncle Richard Cleiveland, a Liverpool merchant, acquired a large fortune, became one of the most eminent merchants of his day, and sat for Liverpool 1710-13. Cleiveland himself headed the poll for Liverpool as a government Whig in 1722. He died as Mar. 1724, aged 28.
