Mountrath was returned at a by-election in 1724 for Castle Rising by his wife’s aunt, Lady Diana Feilding, widow of William Feilding. On 17 Mar. 1721 his father-in-law, Lord Bradford, wrote to Lord Sunderland asking him to move the King to make Mountrath a peer of England, in accordance with a promise alleged to have been made to his elder brother and in consideration of ‘the known merit of the family of Mountrath and their steady adherence to his Majesty’s interest’.
