COOTE, Algernon, 6th Earl of Mountrath [I] (1684-1744).

Mountrath was returned at a by-election in 1724 for Castle Rising by his wife’s aunt, Lady Diana Feilding, widow of William Feilding. On 17 Mar. 1721 his father-in-law, Lord Bradford, wrote to Lord Sunderland asking him to move the King to make Mountrath a peer of England, in accordance with a promise alleged to have been made to his elder brother and in consideration of ‘the known merit of the family of Mountrath and their steady adherence to his Majesty’s interest’.Sunderland (Blenheim) mss. The application was unsuccessful and Mountrath is mentioned in the next Parliament as a Member who always voted against the ministry.HMC Egmont Diary, i. 170. He was not put up in 1734 but contested Bossiney unsuccessfully at a by-election in 1737. In 1741 he stood on William Pulteney’s interest for Hedon, where he was defeated but he was seated on petition. He died 27 Aug. 1744.
