ELIOT, Edward (?1684-1722), of Port Eliot, nr. St. Germans, Cornw.

Descended from the great Sir John Eliot, Eliot succeeded a cousin to an estate carrying control of two seats at St. Germans, which he represented as a Tory under Queen Anne. In 1715 he did not stand but brought in government supporters for St. Germans, in return for which he was appointed receiver-general of the duchy of Cornwall.W. Marrying the sister of James Craggs, he was returned in 1718 for Lostwithiel by the Government, with whom he voted on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts and the peerage bill in 1719. He vacated his seat a year later on being appointed to a place, which he resigned in 1722 in favour of his brother Richard in order to be chosen for Liskeard, where he had established a controlling interest. He died five months later, 18 Sept. 1722.
