GRENVILLE, Richard (1678-1727), of Wotton, Bucks.

Grenville (pronounced and often spelt ’Greenville’), married the favourite sister of Sir Richard Temple, afterwards Lord Cobham, whose peerage was entailed on her and her sons. At George I’s accession he was adopted as the Whig candidate for Buckinghamshire on a compromise with the Tories, but eventually stood down in favour of Richard Hampden,Verney Letters of the 18th Cent. i. 317-20; Earl of Buckinghamshire’s mss 40/46, Bucks. RO. by whom he was returned for Wendover, voting with the Government in every recorded division except on Lord Cadogan. In the next Parliament he represented Buckingham on the interest of Lord Cobham. On his death, Cobham virtually adopted his children, ultimately settling his whole estate on the eldest, Richard, thus uniting the estates of Wotton and Stowe.Grenville Pprs. i. 422 seq.
