HILL, Sir Roger (c.1642-1729), of Denham, Bucks.

Sir Roger Hill, whose father came from an old Somerset family and was M.P. for Bridport in the Long Parliament, bought the manor of Denham from the Bowyers in 1670.Lipscomb, Bucks. iv. 445, 456. Described by Judge Jeffreys in 1685 as ‘a horrid Whig’ and ‘a fierce exclusionist’,CSP Dom. 1685, pp. 122-3. he was returned for the sixth time on the Hampden interest at Wendover in 1715, voting for the Administration in all recorded divisions. Standing again in 1722, at the age of 80, he apparently lost the Hampden interest to Sir Richard Steele, who beat him by 71 votes. He died 29 Dec. 1729, aged 87.
