As a youth Hotham visited Hanover, where he made friends with the electoral prince, afterwards George II. Succeeding his father to the family seat at Beverley, he voted with the Administration in every recorded division. He was made a groom of the bedchamber on the accession of George II, who sent him to Berlin in 1730 on a confidential mission to arrange a double marriage between the heirs apparent and the Princesses Royal of England and Prussia.
