A Whig, whose father had represented the county, Lennard was appointed to the Prince of Wales’s household when this was first set up in November 1714. Returned on the Lord Warden’s interest for Hythe from 1715, he voted with the Government except on Lord Cadogan, resigning his place after the Prince’s breach with the King. He owed his knighthood to standing proxy for Prince Frederick when he was installed as Knight of the Garter in April 1718.
