LONG, Sir James, 5th Bt. (?1681-1729), of Draycot Cerne, nr. Chippenham, Wilts.

The Longs of Drayton were a branch of the ancient Wiltshire family of Long of Wraxall, a line of squires most of whom had, since the fifteenth century, represented either the county or one of the Wiltshire boroughs. Sir James Long, a Tory and member of the October Club, after sitting for Chippenham under Anne, was returned unopposed for Wootton Bassett, the other neighbouring borough, in 1715, voting against the Government in all recorded divisions. In 1721 his name was sent to the Pretender as a probable supporter in the event of a rising.Stuart mss 65/16. Returned unopposed for his county in 1727, he died 16 Mar. 1729.
