After a distinguished military career under William III and Marlborough, Lumley was returned in 1715 for Arundel on the interest of his brother. Though a Whig, he opposed the impeachment of Ormonde, 21 June 1715, but he voted for the septennial bill in 1716, and spoke for the Government on the army, 4 Mar. 1717. About this time he was passed over for a military appointment in favour of Lord Cadogan, against whom he and other senior army officers voted in the division of 4 June 1717.
