Herbert Mackworth, of an old Derbyshire and Shropshire family, inherited through his mother large estates in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. These included coalmines and several industrial enterprises together with the Gnoll copper works at Neath, which he himself further developed.D. Rhys Phillips, Hist. Vale of Neath, 227, 238, 268-80, 310. He owed his election for Cardiff to the Windsor interest and his own control of Neath and Aberavon, two boroughs within the constituency. Returned unopposed as a Tory, he voted consistently against the Administration, except on the motion for Walpole’s removal, 13 Feb. 1741, when he was one of the Tories who voted against the motion. He died 20 Aug. 1765.
