Mayo, whose family had for several generations been prominent in local politics, owed his return to a revolt by the local gentry against the domination of Lord Chandos and the Foleys.See under HEREFORD. Described as the ‘creature’ of Lord Coningsby, to whom he owed his appointment as a j.p.,HMC Portland, vii. 318-19; Coningsby, loc. cit. he died 14 Mar. 1723.
