NEWPORT, Hon. Thomas (?1655-1719), of Brigstock Park, Northants.

Thomas Newport was brought in for Much Wenlock in 1715 on the interest of his brother, Lord Bradford, in succession to another brother. Appointed a lord of the Treasury, he spoke and voted for the septennial bill.Ant. Corbi‘re to Horace Walpole, 27 Apr. 1716, Cholmondeley (Houghton) mss. Raised to the peerage in 1716, he was mentioned as a possible successor to James Stanhope as first lord of the Treasury,HMC Stuart, iv. 472. but in the end he was appointed a teller of the Exchequer. He died 27 May 1719, leaving a fine collection of paintings to his brother, Lord Bradford.
